The overall evaluation of this unit is through students connecting drawing of observations they have made of others to creating a concise essay in which they use a book, interview, and film to support their ideas. Throughout the unit, students will make Inside-vs.-Outside drawings which will end in a gallery walk where students can view each other's work. Students will use the ideas that they have in their drawings to create the essays that will be worked on at the end of the unit. For the essay, students will be supported with worksheets. Although discussion questions will push students beyond just worksheets, these worksheets will help them with supporting evidence on their essay. With a grade 10-level course, often students are able to create a way to collect their own evidence, however, students may find the worksheets extremely helpful as a way to organize their thoughts and ideas. These worksheets also help students to understand what is going to be asked of them on the essay. Students are also given the instructions for the essay early on in the unit so that they can pay attention during their work. The gallery walk is a way to assess students who may succeed in an area other than writing. Students are encouraged to get as creative as they wish with their drawings. Students are asked for basic information to pass (name an obstacle the character overcame)-but-to succeed, students must further their thinking (what about the character allowed them to overcome that obstacle). The gallery walk also serves as a way for students to enjoy being part of a community they have built and to take a day to relax the weekend before their essays are due. Students are also required to make a positive comment on other student's work which will continue to further that community to the next unit.
