Review assignment parameters
To give Ss a bit more information about what’s required, show Ss 6 tips for writing six-word memoir: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCJyUMHaL_g .. I allow for Ss questions and then ask the Ss to spend time brainstorming and writing down the different possibilities for their own six word memoir. Eventually ask Ss to choose one memoir they deem their favorite and they would like to use of the remainder of this lesson.
Define the word synonym and provide several examples.
In groups discuss their definitions and explain how authors/poets choose the best word.
Guide Ss to an understanding that synonyms do express similar meanings but they also vary according to connotation, register, and sound/rhythm. You may wish to write these definitions on the board or chart paper for Ss to refer to in later activities.
Connotation: the emotional or personal associations the word carries, beyond its literal definition
Register: the level of formality or informality associated with the word,
Sound and rhythm: the way words sound and can contribute to their appropriateness.
